Samsung Wireless 360 Audio Speakers

Samsung, the world’s leader in smartphones and TVs, has now set its sights on becoming a global leader in home audio. The company is investing heavily in its audio research facility and has recently unveiled its latest innovation: the Samsung Wireless Audio 360º speaker range with unique omni-directional sound technology.

Samsung, Wireless, Audio, 360, System, Home, Speakers

The Samsung Wireless Audio 360º speaker is the first omni-directional speaker on the market. This means it transmits sound in all directions, whereas traditional speakers are uni-directional. Engineers spent over two years researching and developing the speakers at the custom-built Samsung Audio Lab in California. Their focus was on mastering technology that could deliver omni-directional sound without compromising on sound quality.

“The Samsung Wireless Audio 360º is an innovation that is revolutionising the way we listen to music at home. Using the latest Samsung technology, we have created a speaker that fills an entire room with sound for a truly immersive entertainment experience,” says Matthew Thackrah,Deputy Managing Director and Head of Consumer Electronics at Samsung Electronics SA.

Unlike conventional speakers that project sound in a single direction, the Wireless Audio 360º boasts the Samsung Ring Radiator technology, which disperses sound evenly in all directions. The speaker’s numerous other features include an in-built tap-and-swipe user interface, which allows users to connect multiple speakers so the same music can be played across several rooms. With Samsung’s Multiroom app the speaker can be connected to smartphones, tablets and smartwatches over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Shape was an important factor in determining the ideal design for producing omni-directional sound. Dozens of concepts were developed and tested, and the engineers agreed the oval shape was most effective for producing 360º sound while reducing sound distortion and noise. The speaker is also aesthetically pleasing and is designed to enhance any home from a visual perspective.

“Samsung has invested significantly into the Wireless Audio 360º range and we believe it will transform the way consumers experience music with its omni-directional sound, portability and remarkable quality. We are bringing a new kind of high quality sound to the market, with a more intuitive user interface and a simple yet premium design. We firmly believe these features will cement Samsung’s position as a world leader in home audio,” concludes Thackrah.

Models and retail price

The Wireless Audio 360º is available in four different models. The recommended retail price is R2 500 for the R1 model and the top of the range retails at R5 500 for the R7 model. The R7 can be complemented with a tripod stand or ceiling mount, which is an optional extra available in stores from November. Wattage ranges from 45 to 80 watts and certain models are available in white or black.

What to look for in your 4k TV?

In recent months, UHD TV – also known as 4K TV – has emerged as the mainstream consumer option within the TV market. According to a market forecast by leading global market research and consulting firm, IHS DisplaySearch*, up to 230.8 million flat panel TVs are expected to be sold worldwide in 2015, with UHD TVs constituting 13.3% of the total shipment. This translates to 30.6 million units.

What is 4K Ultra High Definition TV?

4K resolution, also called 4K, refers to a display device or content having horizontal resolution on the order of 4,000 pixels.[1]Several 4K resolutions exist in the fields of digital television and digital cinematography. In the movie projection industry, Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) is the dominant 4K standard.

A 4K resolution, as defined by Digital Cinema Initiatives, is 4096 x 2160 pixels (256:135, approximately a 1.9:1 aspect ratio). This standard is widely respected by the film industry along with all other DCI standards.”

“Considering that the ratio of UHD TVs among the entire TV market was only 5.0% (11.7 million units) last year, it is fair to say that UHD TVs are now revitalising the TV market,” says Matthew Thackrah, Deputy Managing Director and Head of Consumer Electronics at Samsung Electronics SA. “Such explosive market response is largely due to the fact that UHD TVs deliver more life-like images with magnificent detail and a level of precision only comparable to what we can see with the naked eye. The resolution of UHD TVs is four-times greater than that of conventional full HD TVs of equal size, hence the name ‘4K’ TVs.”

He continues that the television industry regards the creation of UHD as the most revolutionary leap forward in visual technology since the development of full HD nearly a decade ago and that with such picture quality at stake, it is important to understand the kind of ‘4K’ to look for in UHD TVs.

Pixel structure can impact native resolution

“A TV display is comprised of pixels as the smallest unit,” Thackrah explains. “Every pixel needs to have all red, green and blue lights for each of them to produce accurate colors. If the red, green and blue lights (RGB) are on together they will make white, while having all of them off makes black.”

When these pixels add up, they look something like this:

“RGBW is a modified version in which parts of RGB are transformed into white lights. However, not only do the whites in RGBW become holes when representing colors, they also distort the pixel structure, making it very difficult to define the sharp lines that are crucial to UHD. In other words, these white pixels restrict and limit the colour palate that a TV is capable of showing on its display panel, all while diluting the overall picture quality by affecting clarity, brightness and sharpness.”

Stricter standards to ensure true UHD images

Thackrah emphasises that industry organisations, including the U.S.’s Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and Digital Europe (DE), recently established clear industry standards and UHD certification programmes.

“Both DE and CEA have clearly defined UHD standards that a pixel must be able to independently reproduce a full range of colours. This means that a pixel is only considered a real pixel if the three primary colours of light – red, green, blue – are included, regardless of additional non-RGB sub pixels. As the industry’s number one TV manufacturer for 9 years running, Samsung has acquired UHD certification marks from both DE and CEA for all of its 2015 UHD TV models. Samsung has been making TVs since the 1970s and we have always strived to offer the best to customers. As a part of this endeavor, Samsung Electronics encourages leaders in the TV industry to commit to an industry-wide effort to deliver the most accurate product information to consumers,” he concludes.

”Locomute” – Africa’s first car sharing service

Imagine of having the freedom of commuting and owning a vehicle, without the hassle of actually owning one. These hassles with owning a car: ”buying and running cost”, ”high fuel cost”, ”e-toll cost” and ”insurance cost”. But this will soon be coming to an end, starting-up on the 1st June 2015 we introduce ”Locomute”.

Locomute, Africa Car Share, Urban Mobility, South Africa

Image: Locomute

Locomute is a new a local car sharing company, offers consumers a more tech-savvy and flexible approach in the area of urban mobility. Locomute allows its members, Locomuters, to access any of their cars parked throughout South Africa to use for as long as they want.

Locations of available cars can be found online or through their smartphone application which is also helpful for those prone to forgetting where they parked their vehicle. Members reserve a car online or via the Locomute App and simply swipe a member smartcard over a card reader on the windshield before commencing with their reservation. Locomuters have 24/7 access to a pool of vehicles located within designated zones called Locoparks.

You decide whether you will use the car for a night in town, completing your trip from the Gautrain or just running errands. You only pay for the exact amount of time you use the vehicle. Fuel, insurance, and parking are all included, and one-way trips are allowed (an additional fee may be applicable). Costs include a R499 initiation fee and a monthly fee of R45. There’s also a variable hourly and per-kilometre rate. Once-off users pay a R119 fee in addition to a variable hourly and distance rate.

Locomute, Africa Car Share, Urban Mobility, South Africa

Image: Locomute

Locomute offers an alternative solution to traditional rentals in metropolitan areas. For the first time in Africa, people are able to get a vehicle for an hour or two for short trips instead of renting a car for a day or using mass transit. A car used to be the ultimate symbol of freedom and independence but increasingly consumers view ownership as an expense and a burden. Often considered the gateway to other forms of collaborative consumption, car sharing is becoming increasingly popular with its promise of personal convenience.

This is definitely a taste of the innovations to come in urban mobility. As the need to address problems like congestion and pollution increases, the case for car sharing is particularly compelling. Further, in an era where people buy music by the song, driving a car by the hour only makes sense! It is time to explore this new age where access is better than ownership.

It’s a remarkably small and efficient chip on which two billion transistors deliver incredible performance with up to 50 percent more energy efficiency than the previous A7 chip.

”Say Cheese”, The Camera

The iPhone has not changed much in the camera megapixel as compared to the iPhone 5s, which in this case is the iSight 8MP camera but it came packing with other features and improvements. A new wide angle iSight lens, true tone flash, f/2.2 aperture, greater noise reduction, digital image stabilisation and a 2 x faster autofocus provide even better images. The rear camera can shoot 1080p video and the Slo-mo video mode has been boosted to give you the option to record in either 120 fps or 240 fps. Videos also benefit from continuous autofocus, plus Apple has added a new time-lapse mode to the mix.

The iOS 8 operating system

With the release of the latest iOS 8 system which would be released and available the 17th September, which could be downloaded and updated on the previous iPhone models such as the iPhone 4s, 5, 5C and 5S. The iOS 8 system features tighter Mac OS X Yosemite integration while loosening the restrictions on Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor. This goes a long way to the Passbook-integrated Apple Pay. New software kits also bring once fragmented security and health gadgets together, something that this year’s “one more thing” surprise, the Apple Watch, will takes advantage of in early 2015.

Other New Features

Barometer – The barometer senses air pressure to determine your relative elevation. So as you move, you can keep track of the elevation you’ve gained. It can even measure stairs climbed or hills conquered.

Accelerometer – The accelerometer can measure your distance for walking and running. And by using GPS to calibrate for your running stride, the sensor more accurately captures your movement.

Gyroscope – In addition to knowing whether you’re on the move or stationary, M8 works with the gyroscope to detect when you’re driving. It also kicks into action when you’re taking panoramic photos or playing games that react to your movement.
